In February/March 2012 my husband and I spent three weeks in Mali traveling with a car and guide provided by Tounga Tours. It was a fabulous experience. Tounga Tours was outstanding in all respects. When troubles erupted in Mali in November, owner Ann was very thorough and responsible in her replies to our concerns. She reported honestly about how the troubles had affected tourism and then kept us constantly informed about developments as our trip approached. In the end we made a couple of minor adjustments in our itinerary, e.g., we flew rather than drove to Timbuktu, but otherwise we proceeded exactly as planned (Segou music festival, 3-day pinasse trip on Niger, 6 days trekking in Dogon country, Djenne and Timbuktu).

We could not be more thrilled with the experience in Mali. It is the most authentic, fascinating country we've ever visited in Africa. The architecture is otherworldly, villages are beautiful and friendly, and the cultural history of the country is absorbing. We felt safe at all times, including in Timbuktu where we hope we were the beginning of a resurgence of tourism activity.

Our guide, Adama, has to be the best English-speaking guide in the country. He was a treasure trove of legend and history. He made everything about Mali sparkle for us. Our Tuareg guide, Abou, in Timbuktu was excellent.

Mali does not deserve to be boycotted by tourists especially from the US where driving through the wrong part of certain cities is likely to be much more dangerous. This country is a gem. Don't miss it while it is still as true to itself as it is right now.

De tour gaf ons in de dagen die we hadden een zeer ingrijpend beeld van (het leven in) Afrika.We hadden dit nooit op een andere manier zo kunnen ervaren.
Onze gids Lasinne was heel vriendleijk, goed geïnformeerd en heel betrokken met alles wat er gebeurde. Hij was heel goed verstaanbaar (frans) en nam de tijd om alles rustig uit te leggen. Lasinne was echt een goede gids!
De tour gaf ons een compleet beeld van de schoonheid en historie van Afrika en zijn verschillende volken, maar ook van de moeilijkheden en de strijd van alledag.

Heel heel hartelijk dank voor het warme onthaal (zowel bij aankomst als de laatste dag) bij jou in het guest house. Dat deed enorm deugd. Maar ook voor de rest van de reis ben ik vol lof. Het was perfect georganiseerd. Ik zal het zeker aan iedereen aanbevelen.
Ook nog eens dank voor de vele aanpassingen die moesten gebeuren.
Ik hoop echt dat de rust en vrede in Mali weerkeert en dat mensen weer "durven" op reis gaan naar Mali. Wij hebben in ieder geval genoten en niets negatief ondervonden.

Adama + Bah are Mali's treasures. We were taken care of with the greatest amount of kindness, generosity and consideration every step of the way. Bah was very familiar with all aspects of “driving” such as safety, punctuality (timeless) and comfort. Adama's skills are vast: familiarity, intelligence and thoughtfulness. His respect for the Malian people is outstanding. In terms of hotels most were sufficient and when they weren't Adama ensured that they catered to our needs. The hotel in Gaoua, Burkina Faso was by far the least favorable (…). Local guides could improve their English skill but overall they were very nice + respectful. Also Latif (guide for Burkina was excellent. Very knowledgeable of his area + very respectful.)

Het was een hele mooie aangename reis. We hebben Mali kunnen ontdekken op deze manier. We hebben ons altijd veilig gevoeld mede dankzij de gids en een hele goede chauffeur.
De hele reis was goed georganiseerd. De gids zorgde voor de praktische dingen en was ook flexibel om het programma aan te passen aan onze noden.
De prachtige landschappen, de Dogonvallei, de steden Djenné, Segou en Mopti en ook de boottochten zullen we niet vergeten.

The trip Ann created for us was truly amazing! Though our time in Mali was short, we were able to visit many regions and learn about ancient and recent history. The best part was the patience and generosity of our guide, Adama, who brought us through Dogon country, introduced us to local people and cultural traditions of different villages. We felt very comfortable with the Mali people and were grateful for their hospitality and kindness of Ann, Sophie (Djenne Djenno) when we stayed in their Inns – both mixed European and African influences in architecture and décor. It felt absolutely safe to travel in Mali and we hope to return again soon to explore the arts and music which thrive here.
We also want to thank Ba, for his superb driving, especially at the ferry.

Beste Ann,

Wij zullen nog lang nagenieten van onze boeiende reis, ook al vanwege de vele foto's die Renske in een fotoboek gaat verwerken en de vele uren film die Martin in een beknopt dvd-reisverslag zal omzetten. Het was heel handig om de reis vooraf in goed overleg met jou via de
e-mail uit te stippelen. Wij wilden de gebruikelijke hoogtepunten beleven, zoals met de pinasse naar Timboektoe, vijf dagen wandelen in Dogonland, op maandag in Djenné, maar ook enkele dagen bij het muziekfestival sur le Niger in Ségou. En wij wilden naast het kamperen langs de Niger en het slapen op de daken in Dogonland graag ook tussendoor wat meer comfortabele hotels. In onze reis van 3 weken heb je dat prima bij elkaar gebracht. Het succes van onze reis is zeker ook gevoed door de uitstekende gids Adama en de zorgvuldige chauffeur Ba. Wij hebben lange gesprekken met Adama gevoerd over leven, welzijn, cultuur, geschiedenis, enz. en dat leverde beslist een verrijking op bovenop wat we allemaal aan moois hebben gezien.
Al met al zeer waardevol voor ons. Hartelijk dank voor je professionele inzet. Alle goeds voor jou, je gezin en voor Tounga Tours.

Tounga Tours - group to the 'Festival au Desert', December 30th 2010 - January 14th 2011

The trip was very well organized and everything worked out fine. Our guide and driver were excellent.
The music side of the festival was rather a desilusion since the good music was played (if ever) only very late at night.
Food varied in quality (the cook at Essakane being by far the best of the trip), but not in type (beef, capitaine, poulet x rice, couscous, spaghetti).
We had very good and interesting insight into the parts of Mali we visited and took a lot of impressions form the trip!

Only comment for future: on the itinerary where it says “overnight with a local family” in Dogon country, it would have been helpful to know to bring a sleeping bag or/and toilet paper …
Not a problem for us but we could imagine it being slightly cold or uncomfortable for others …

Overall Mali was fantastic and authentic West Africa.
The West African people are absolutely wonderful and welcoming to travelers.
The music at the Festival in Toumbouctou was below average but the Tounga Tours tent was fun and very hospitable.
Hombori and Dogon + Mask Dance were highlights, as was Old Segou, Djenné.
Mix of accommodation, from basic to luxury, was great.
Sugar Cane in Banfora + Djenné Djenno + first night in Dogon [in Beignematou] were highlight hotels + Tamana (better than Grand Hotel).
Auberge in Segou very unfriendly owners + Kaaky Palace in Sikasso below average (too far out from town).
Burkina Faso was great but some places not worth visiting – Ouagadougou, Koudougou – people + culture were fantastic.
Isaac [the guide] was exceptional !! A great companion.
Sikasso not so interesting – maximum 1 night.
Bogolan demonstration in Segou was great.
Modibo is a great and very safe driver!
Overall very happy with Tounga Tours, Ann's management and the whole experience. Higly recommended. Thank you very much.

Heel bijzonder, je wordt helemaal ondergedompeld in een andere cultuur. De beelden van Afrika zien op t.v. is toch echt iets heel anders dan het zelf beleven. Door deze reis hebben we allerlei verschillende facetten van Mali leren kennen - voedsel, vervoer, geschiedenis, tradities, godsdiensten, het belang van familie en middelen van bestaan.
Het heeft nog enige tijd nodig om alle indrukken te laten bezinken.

Heel blij dat we een stukje authentiek Mali mochten ontdekken: de verscheidenheid van de kleurrijke bevolking, hun traditionele levenswijze, de unieke lemen architectuur die zo harmonieus past in het mooie wisselende landschap.
De Afrikaanse hitte, het vuil en het lome ritme vragen een aanpassing maar onze minzame chauffeur deed er alles aan om het ons aangenaam te maken. M. Keita, zijn verhaal, zijn muziek, zijn weemoedige stem drukken een onvergetelijke stempel op onze Malinese ervaring.

In onze negendaagse trip waarin wij Djenné, Mopti, de Dogon en Segou hebben bezocht, kregen wij een indruk van Mali. Met name door de contacten van onze gids, zijn brede talenkennis waaronder het Engels, zijn enthousiasme en zijn kennis van de natuur en cultuur, hebben wij als 'Toubab' toch kunnen proeven van het Malinese leven.

Wij zijn heel tevreden over de reis. De gids sprak meerdere talen waardoor wij goed konden communiceren.
De chauffeur nam geen onnodige risico's. De problemen met de eerste auto zijn heel goed en snel opgelost. In de route was bij Mopti een bezoek aan een vissersdorp opgenomen. De wijze waarop de mensen van dit dorp met toeristen omgingen was onprettig en geen aanrader vergeleken met de overige excursies. We vonden het een mooi land met vooral een erg vriendelijke bevolking. Een aanrader maar voor ons zou in het koele seizoen beter geweest zijn.

I was extremely pleased with my Tounga Tour experience in Mali. Travelling up the Niger in a pinasse, attending the Festival in the Desert and trekking through Dogon country will always be cherished memories for me.
Ann ably handled logistics, Samba was an excellent driver and Ibrahim an outstanding guide. Tounga made sure I experienced all that the fascinating culture of Mali had to offer. I would highly recommend Tounga Tours to anyone contemplating a visit to this wonderful country.

Mali is a country to discover and deserves better. Very friendly people, never experienced criminality. The climate was more positive than a northern European could fear and no nasty animals or bugs to spoil the day. The Niger river on a pinasse, Timbuktu and the desert, Dogon country trekking where 3 highlights that make a complete and perfect fit for a 2 weeks travel.
Very well organised and an anchor point in Bamako is the ideal outfit.

The tour exceeded my expectations. Having spent a number of years in West-Africa (Ghana) I was prepared for all the "typical quirks" of the region.
The guide, Ibrahim, was attentive, helpful and flexible at all times. He acted less than a tourism worker and more as a local friend, showing you the joys of his country.
I was pleased with the driver, Samba, also. The most level headed, capable driver I have had in West-Africa. Always on time and more importantly always safe.

(Boubacary) was een hele goeie gids. Het was bijzonder prettig dat hij ook heel goed Engels sprak. Hij heeft ons veel over Mali en haar inwoners verteld. Toen we een dagje niet helemaal fit waren paste hij het programma meteen snel en flexibel aan en dat was erg fijn. We vonden Mali een mooi en interessant land. En het was een bijzondere en hele leuke belevenis om te zien hoe de mensen hier leven. Iedereen was vriendelijk en ik heb lekker gevoetbald in de Dogon met de bal die we mee hadden gebracht. We hebben de bal daar ook achtergelaten en ze waren heel heel blij met de bal!!!
En het was een hele coole vakantie.

Dankzij jullie uitstekende organisatie en de onberispelijke begeleiding hebben wij een schitterende reis doorheen Mali gemaakt.

Heel attente, interessante gids. Zeer aangenaam in de omgang, weet heel veel en hij doet het met z'n hart, zonder opdringerig te zijn.
Het openbaar vervoer viel heel goed mee. Madou wist overal alles goed te regelen!

De reis heeft onze verwachtingen meer dan ingelost. Dit drukke programma binnen een periode van 14 dagen afwerken is niet simpel. Doch dit is aardig gelukt. De gids Barrou kent zijn land door en door. Ook de lokale gidsen zijn wel goed uitgekozen en voldoende geïnformeerd over het dag programma. Nooit kwamen we voor verrassingen. Dus het was aangenaam reizen in dit gastvrije land.

Wat onthouden we van die reis:
Het verrassende van Djenné. Men spreekt er van maar je moet het toch eerst gezien hebben.
De chaotische drukte van de havenstad Mopti.
De alternatieve rustgevende manier van reizen met pinasse over de indrukwekkende Niger naar Tombouctou.
De verloren stad Tombouctou die herrijst uit zijn as. Mede dankzij vele internationale hulp.
De Dogon waar het trekken toch wel eerder wandelen is van dorp tot dorp. Een beetje te veel auto's die eigenlijk grotendeels het zelfde traject als de wandelaars volgen. Toerisme heeft soms ook zijn nadeel. Misschien zou een alternatief  van reizen zijn in die streek per ossenwagen.
De hardwerkende Malinees want die kom je overal tegen.
De goeie keuze om in die periode Mali te bezoeken. aanvaardbare temperaturen, blauwe hemel en overal een overvloed aan voedsel.

The monday market scene in Djenné was fascinating beyond words; the people, the color, the smells... all with the mosque as a magnificent backdrop.
Hiking down (and back up) the Bandiagara into the beautiful Dogon villages; sunset pinasse trips along the Niger out of Segou and Mopti; And everyone, The children!!!
We will have many happy memories of Mali and its people, its culture, art and architecture, the stark beauty of the landscape; the star-filled night skys while sleeping on the rooftops in Pays Dogon. (...)

We hebben genoten!! Heerlijk om alleen maar te hoeven genieten, omdat alles tot in de kleinste details geregeld was. Niks geen zorgen, maar pure verwennerij. Onze chauffeur rijdt als de beste en is een zeer bescheiden man. Niets dan lof voor onze gids Madou, heel bescheiden, beleefd, en zeer informatief. Daarnaast ook heel aangenaam gezelschap; vrolijk, gezellig en altijd in voor een geintje. Leuk!!

We saw a lot of (what we think) the authentic Africa when we walk around in the villages in Dogon Country, Mopti, Djenné and Bamako both together with our guide and also sometimes by ourselves, and we thought that was very good!

Reeds bij de eerste contacten via internet voelde het heel goed aan. Mails werden spoedig en uitvoerig beantwoord.
De voorgestelde route bleek een perfecte mix van avontuur, cultuur en een zeer nauw contact met de bevolking. Regelmatig werd ook een deugddoend rustpunt in een hotel ingebouwd.
Het programma zit eivol maar wordt minutieus afgewerkt.
Ibrahim, onze gids, en Amadou, onze chauffeur, bleken beiden zeer bekwaam en verantwoordelijk. Ze waren tevens uitstekend en aangenaam gezelschap.
In een korte periode kregen we erg veel van Mali te zien. Een aanrader!
